Golf is a very simple sport that consists of “playing a ball, using a club, from the tee area to the hole, executing a shot or successive shots according to the rules.” This is probably the key rule in the game of Golf.
Undoubtedly, it is one of the oldest sports that we are aware of. It was in 1754, St Andrews, Scotland, when golf rules were established.
Competition modalities and rules date back to the second half of the 18th century and have rarely changed since then. Today Golf is played by more than 60 million men and women around the world in more than 30,000 golf courses globally.
Earlier, amateur and professional tournaments were the main tournaments. Then came the open (Opens), bringing the above two categories of players together. Today, the best golfers in the world (men and women) compete in the four major championships: The Masters, US Open, PGA Championship, and The Open (British Open).
The two most used modes in golf tournaments are Stroke Play and Match Play.
- Match Play – is a game in the format of a duel. Golfers compete for hole by hole. Whoever conquers maximum holes wins the match. Match Play matches do not need to go through all 18 holes. Usually, they run, but as the player opens an insurmountable advantage, the game ends sooner. For example, if the player is six ahead with five holes to play, the other player cannot win, so the game is over.
- Stroke Play – consists of counting the number of strokes that the player performed to reach the end of the field. Current tournaments take place over four days, and players must play the same 18-hole course four times (72 holes). At the end of the four rounds, the player with the least strokes wins the event.
PUTT and SWING in Golf
The “Swing” is the movement (the action) performed to hit the ball with the club to make it fly towards the Green.
The “Putt” is the movement (the action) performed to hit the ball to make it roll on the grass (usually the Green) and get the ball into the hole or very near to the hole.
